Under the new directive, the Department of Foreign Affairs has been authorised to issue digital nomad visas valid for up to one year. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a stable income and must be nationals of countries that offer reciprocal visa arrangements to Filipinos.
The move bring the Philippines on the list of a growing number of nations that are embracing remote work visa programmes, despite a global shift in some regions towards returning to physical office spaces. The scheme is expected to attract long-stay visitors who can contribute to the local economy without competing in the domestic job market.

While the country has seen a recovery in tourism revenue, foreign visitor numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels. Officials hope the digital nomad visa will help bridge that gap by drawing in a new demographic of travellers — those who blend work and leisure.
According to government data, tourism accounted for 8.6% of the Philippines’ gross domestic product in 2023. By opening its doors to remote workers, the government is aiming to strengthen this vital sector.
Recently, to boost its tourism economy, Philippines launched an electronic visa (e-Visa) system for Indian passport holders, making travel to the Southeast Asian nation simpler and convenient. The new digital platform, introduced by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), eliminates the need for in-person visits to embassies or consulates, streamlining the visa application process.

The system, which completed successful beta testing in 2023, is expected to encourage more Indian visitors to explore the Philippines by removing traditional bureaucratic barriers. According to the DFA, the initiative reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing travel access and promoting international tourism.
With the new e-Visa system, Indian applicants can now apply for their travel visas entirely online. By visiting the official website — evisa.gov.ph — applicants can fill out the required forms and make secure payments through direct bank transfers. Once approved, the visa is delivered electronically to the applicant’s email, providing a quick, paperless solution to securing entry to the country.
